The International Commons Conference (ICC) which took place from Oct 31 to Nov 2 2010 in Berlin, was a mirror of the global commons movement. I try to outline this state from my viewpoint in ten theses.

1. The global commons movement exists as an assemblage of movements spread around the globe beginning to become aware of its global and interrelated character. As a global movement it is still establishing its own self-confidence rather than being a coherent agent.

Die Internationale Commons Conference (ICC), die vom 31.10. bis 2.11.2010 in Berlin stattfand, spiegelt den Stand der globalen Commons-Bewegung wider. In zehn Thesen versuche ich diesen Stand aus meiner Sicht zu umreissen.

1. Die globale Commons-Bewegung existiert als Zusammenfügung der über den Erdball verteilten Bewegungen, die beginnen, sich ihres globalen und zusammenhängenden Charakters bewusst zu werden. Als eine globale Bewegung ist sie also derzeit eher eine Bewegung des Selbstbewusstwerdens als ein gemeinsamer Akteur.

During the first two days of November, the International Commons Conference organized by the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Commons Strategies Group took place in Berlin. Throughout the conference, I wrote down various remarks by participants which I considered insightful, interesting, or amusing. The following quotes are meant to convey the spirit of what the quoted person said, but not necessarily the precise wording (since I often wasn’t fast enough to exactly get the latter).

This is really a rich autumn in terms of conferences around peer production. The CPOV conference in Leipzig, the FCRC in Berlin last weekend and the upcoming conference in Amsterdam. And when I think of the CPOV in Amsterdam and the Hull conference in spring then it is even a rich year.

One of the interesting things is that for instance on the Free Culture Research Conference there were a couple of talks which could have been given on an Oekonux Conference very well. Seems like we adopted some topics very early when we had our first conference in 2001 🙂 . Of course I kept a couple of speakers as possible speakers for [ox5].

Die grüne Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung hat erfolgreich das Thema der Commons (Gemeingüter) besetzt. Sie ist nun auch Gastgeberin der Internationalen Commons-Konferenz (ICC), die am 1. und 2. November in der Stiftung in Berlin stattfindet. Titel der Konferenz: »Constructing a Commons-Based Policy Platform«.

Aus Platzmangel wurde der Zugang beschränkt, wer keine Einladung hat, kommt nicht rein. Außer am 1.11. abends: Um 19:30 Uhr findet in der Stiftung eine öffentliche Podiumsdiskussion statt zum Thema »Wohlstand durch Teilen: Gemeingüter als politische Leitlinie?«

Am 8. und 9. Oktober 2010 findet an der Freien Universität Berlin die dritte wissenschaftliche Konferenz über Freie Kultur statt. Titel der Konferenz: »Freie Kultur zwischen Commons und Märkten — Annäherung an eine hybride Ökonomie?« Die Teilnahme an der Konferenz ist kostenlos, eine Anmeldung ist jedoch erforderlich. Die Helle Panke und die Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung laden ein zu einer Tagung mit dem Titel »Kapitalismus dot com. Digitale Produktionsverhältnisse und politische Perspektiven« (hier als PDF-Flyer). Die Veranstaltungsdaten:

Ich nehme an dem Podium »Konflikte um Arbeit und Eigentum im „digitalen“ Kapitalismus« teil — und bin sehr gespannt.

Leitfragen der Tagung sind: Wie funktioniert Ausbeutung und Herrschaft im „digitalisierten“ Kapitalismus? Welche gesellschaftlichen Auseinandersetzungen, Kräfteverhältnisse und Widerstandspotentiale entstehen? Welche Debatten werden darum geführt und wie könnte linke Intervention aussehen?

Brazilian President Lula da Silva gave a passionate speech about the importance of Free Software and the Internet at the 10th Free Software International Forum, in Porto Alegre, Brazil, June 26th, 2009. He is talking about the significance of Free Software for the new self-esteem of Brazil as a »new country« and about »digital inclusion« being the »most sexy word of government«.

Die Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung veranstaltet nächstes Wochenende in Berlin eine Kongress zum Thema „Überleben in den Creative Industries“ in der Volksbühne im Prater. Ich werde dort Freitag Abend um 20:30h auf einem Podium mit Wolfgang Schimmel, Sabine Nuss und Matthias Spielkamp über Urheberrechte diskutieren. Ich würde mich freuen euch da zu sehen. Wer mag, kann sich ja vorher nochmal meine Thesen zum Thema angucken.
