Some notes on value and crisis

On the newly created demonetization.it mailing list (see demonetize.it), a hot debate on money and value started. As it went along, I thought it would be helpful to differentiate separate notions of value. This might refine our understanding of both the crisis and the way out of it: demonetization. The linguistic field of value as it appears in everyday language could be differentiated into four distinct concepts which are interrelated:

1. value
2. exchange value
3. use value
4. price

Berlin Water: Successful Referendum

An astonishing event happend yesterday in Berlin, Germany. There was a referendum on contract transparency of water privatization in Berlin, which has been won (details see below). The referendum demanded all contracts to be openly published, and if not, to be declared invalid. In order to understand the real meaning of this referendum, one has to know a bit of the background.

Open Letter to Dilma Rousseff and Ana de Hollanda

EN: After Dilma Rousseff has been elected as President of Brasil the new Ministry of Culture, Ana de Hollanda, withdrew from supporting free culture, which had been given by the state for eight years. Now, people from brasilian civil society wrote an Open Letter (English by Volker Grassmuck) asking for continuing cooperation against restrictions of creativity, openness and net neutrality. — Please sign!

DE: Nachdem Dilma Rousseff als Präsidentin von Brasilien gewählt wurde, zog sich die neue Kulturministerin Ana de Hollanda von der Unterstützung der Freien Kultur zurück, die seit acht Jahren vom Staat geleistet wurde. Egypt: Footage and Photos under CC

The Qatar based televison network Al Jazeera released footages (raw film material) and photos (at their Flickr account) from the Egypt Riots under Creative Commons Attribution License (as long the logo remains intact in the remix). Using CC Al Jazeera is ahead compared to other network stations glued to proprietary formats. Although Egypt information minister shuted down Al Jazerra’s office in Cairo, Al Jazeera announced that »it will continue its in-depth and comprehensive reporting on the events unfolding in Egypt«. Culture Flatrate?

EN (DE unten) Felix Stadler writes:

»Free Culture, in its most basic notion, is about the resources and rights available to every individual to make a contribution of his or her choosing to culture (a distributed system of meaning) and to communicate the activities to anybody he or she wishes to. It is a transformative view of culture were the input and output of the productive process are not categorically distinct, implying that existing cultural artifacts and processes are part of the resources available to everyone.
