Project Oekonux researches the economical, political and social forms of Free Software and similar forms of production we collectively call peer production. In Project Oekonux, different people with different reasons and different approaches get together to build something new. A lot of participants want to know, whether and if so, how, the peer production can serve as a basis for a new society.

DE: Vom 27. bis 29. März 2009 sollte eigentlich die 4. Oekonux-Konferenz in Manchester (GB) stattfinden. Da bisher keine finanzkräftigen Sponsoren gefunden werden konnten und nun auch ein letzter Antrag abgelehnt wurde, steht die Konferenz auf dem Spiel.

EN: The 4th Oekonux conference should take place from 27th to 29th of march 2009 in Manchester (UK). Due to financially strong sponsors could not have been found until now, and a final application for a grant has been rejected, the conference is at stake.

I’m just on the way back home from this great conference which took place in Thiruvananthapuram in the state of Kerala / India. I must say I’m really deeply impressed. I would wish that Free Software including things like Oekonux says would have that backing in Germany / Europe / industrialized countries!

Here’s my submission for the Fourth Oekonux Conference (the official deadline for submissions ended two days ago).

Title: Peer Production Everywhere

Subtitle: How Can We Do It And Where Can We Start?

Abstract:

I’ll talk about how commons-based peer production can be extended to all areas of life. How might a society based on peer production look like and which principles will be typical for such a society? I’ll also talk about which steps are reasonable to encourage the emergence of such a society.

Stefan Merten, founder of Oekonux project, is going to give a presentation at FrOSCon — the Free and Open Source Conference in Sankt Augustin, Germany, 23th – 24th of august. The presentation titled »The (Open Source) World in 2020 — A History Based Look into the Future« is already online. Stefan’s style is to cut down complex analysis to handy statements, where he draws his conclusions from.

Here are the conclusions giving a good overview of the talk:

• 1984 — Very beginnings may be hard to notice
• 1996 — Good ideas grow because they are useful to people
• 2008 — Basic principles are strong enough to spread out
• First basic principle: Selbstentfaltung — Something what individual and society wants
• Second basic principle: Openness — Technology may make way for new societal phenomenons
• A new mode of production emerges — Something wrong with classic economy 😉
• Power from new principles — Oekonux thesis: New mode of production => new society
• Five-step model of development — There is hope!
• Capitalism as a successful germ form: 200 years back — A new mode of production as a germ form can take over
• A peek into the future — Vertical expansion is quite sure — Horizontal expansion depends on many aspects
• Deeper embedding — More won’t happen in 12 years

Während der letzten Dekade ist das Phänomen Freier Software erfolgreich und weithin bekannt geworden. Es ist immer noch erstaunlich wie die Kreativität so vieler Freiwilliger im Bereich der Software zu Produkten führt, die für die ganze Menschheit nützlich sind. 1999 begann das Oekonux-Projekt dieses Phänomen zu untersuchen, um die besonderen Eigenschaften Freier Software als soziales und politisches Vorhaben zu verstehen.

Jenseits der Welt Freier Software entwickeln sich heute Projekte sehr schnell, die auf dem ähnlichen Anssatz der Peer-Produktion basieren, einschließlich Wikipedia und viele andere mehr. Es ist Zeit sich die Peer-Produktion in einer breiteren Perspektive anzuschauen.

During the past decade the phenomenon of Free Software has become successful and well-known. It is still amazing how in the realm of software the creativity of so many volunteers leads to products which are useful for the whole mankind. In 1999 the Oekonux Project started with analyzing this phenomenon and trying to understand the special features of Free Software as a social and political enterprise.

Today, beyond the Free Software world, projects based on a similar approach of peer production are rapidly emerging, including Wikipedia and many more. It is time to look at peer production from a broader perspective.

Heute hatte ich ein Telefoninterview in der Sendung »NerdAlert« vom freien Radio FSK aus Hamburg. Bis etwa drei Sekunden vorher wusste ich nicht wirklich, worum es gehen soll. Was dann im Interview dran kam, war eine ziemliche große Bandbreite von den Anfängen von Oekonux über freie Hardware bis zum Peerconomy-Konzept. Alles mehr oder weniger angerissen, ist aber einigermaßen gut gelaufen. Na ja, im Nachhinein fallen mir eine Menge Quirks auf…

Aber hört selbst den ersten Teil (OGG) der Sendung (Interview etwa ab der 10. Minute).

Danach diskutiert das NerdAlert-Team über das Interview (etwa ab 53:30) und dann weiter im zweiten Teil (OGG) der Sendung (etwa bis 13:00). Mir scheint, dass eine der nächsten Sendungen sich mit der Peerconomy befassen wird — Christian ist bestimmt zum Interview bereit 🙂

Auf der Oekonux-Mailingliste gibt es eine interessante Debatte über das Verhältnis von Privateigentum und gesellschaftlicher Veränderung, insbesondere wenn es um die commons-basierte Produktion stofflicher Güter geht. Raoul Victor aus Frankreich schrieb:

Die ursprüngliche Frage war, wie mit der Eigentumstransformation umzugehen ist, wenn sie die materiellen Produktionsmittel betrifft. Ich bestand auf der Tatsache, dass dies zu dem einem oder anderen Zeitpunkt (wahrscheinlich noch viele Jahre hin) zu einer allgemeinen sozialen Konfrontation mit dem Kapitalismus führt, wobei die „Arbeiter der Welt“ die Hauptrolle spielen werden und die Keime der Peer-Produktionspraxen — hauptsächlich im Bereich frei reproduzierbarer Güter — dann eine wichtige Rolle bei der Evolution ihres Bewusstseins gespielt haben werden. Aufgrund der Natur des Kapitalismus ist diese Konfrontation unvermeidlich.
