The question of transition and the role of money

A paragraph of my previous post about an article from Michel Bauwens in we_magazine lead to heavy reactions of Michel, cross-posted here and in Oekonux mailing list. Since some posts only go to the mailing list, I re-publish one of my responses here again. Here we go:

Hi Michel,

I try to answer your questions as best as I can, but I also take the freedom to question your questions, because they base on assumptions I don’t share.

Open Design and Open Manufacturing

we_magazineMichel Bauwens from P2P-Foundation recently published an interesting article in the new we_magazine (=>Manifesto) summing up current developments in peer production. After explaining the most important aspects of immaterial peer production he discusses the differences when coming to material production. Elevate Festival 2008 — Videos Online

The team of the impressive Elevate festival in Graz in november 2008 released a bunch of video clips of music and discussion events. You will find them in a series of videos at elevatefestival2008.blip.tv

»Elevate the Commons« was the motto of the discourse part of the festival. Here, you can watch the final panel entitled »Reclaiming the Commons« (english):

Manifest for the recovery of common goods of humanity

forum social mundial[Concluded at World Social Forum of 2009, at Belem – Pará, Brazil. Übersetzung ins Deutsche hier folgt, vgl. auch CommonsBlog]

The enclosure movement in England during the 15th and 16th centuries limited the access to land and its benefits to its owners, thus making it inaccessible to the public as it had been traditionally. This initiated the process of the privatization of common human necessities. Subsequently, the world was ruled under the logic of the capitalistic system of production, in which everything can be transformed into money, and industrialization engendered mass production. The process of privatization, linked to an unrestrained mercantilization, aggravated greed and competition.

Inclusive Democracy

EN: The »Inclusive Democracy Project« of Takis Fotopoulos may be regarded as forerunner of the »Peer Economy Model« of Christian Siefkes. It is amazing that many ideas look similar (e.g. the rejection of markets and state, awarding of taking over unpopular efforts, or the non-representational assemblies from the local to the global level). Takis Fotopoulos is explaining his model in the following video. [Update: English subtitles can be chosen using the black drop down list in the bottom menu bar of the video]

Re-hacking your World

Today there are really interesting sessions at transmediale: Re-hacking your World. Intro:

Re-hacking your World examines issues of crisis and possibility by intervening in the relationships between environment, industry and culture. Has our cultural hardware and software become useless and unserviceable faced with the complex challenges that confront us? In order to prevent a complete takeover of commercial interests in the development of digital cultures in Africa, Asia and Latin America, it becomes essential to promote and strengthen the vocabulary of open source systems and develop fair use mechanisms.

The track has three sessions: Sensible Software, Fair Trade Hardware, I Saw Disaster
