Book »Life Without Money«

The new book Life Without Money; Building Fair and Sustainable Economies (co-edited by Anitra Nelson and Frans Timmerman) has just been released. The ten contributors to Life Without Money argue that we need to dispense with monetary values and relationships — yes, money per se — in order to manage our world on the basis of humane and natural values.

The book brings together diverse voices with strong arguments against our money-based system’s ability to improve lives and prevent environmental disaster. It provides a strategy for undercutting capitalism by refusing to deal in money, and offers money-free models of governance and collective sufficiency. Life Without Money is written by high-profile activist scholars, including Harry Cleaver, Ariel Salleh and John O’Neill, and is an inspiring manifesto for those who want to take action.

However, the book cannot be obtained »without money«, it has to be purchased in a bookstore. And the website indicates, that strict copyright applies. Creative Commons licenses are not used, which contradicts the aim of the book.

Is demonetization a really good idea?

Recently a companera asked me, if it really is such a good idea to start from abolishing money, since it seems to enhance freedom and quality of life especially for the most poor of us. I thought about it for a while and than answered that I do not see evidence for that.

Over the last year, I read and thought a lot about Tanzania (as a case study for the land grab, the results are partly published in German). Having now quite a good picture of the situation in Tanzania (and some overview of the situation in Africa as a whole), I doubt that money ever did any good job there.

Actually, I would say, things are getting increasingly worse particularly because of monetary relations.

Peer Production and Societal Transformation

The new journal Critical Studies in Peer Production (CSPP) invited me to submit a debate paper for the next issue on Free Software. In this paper I try to describe analytical patterns developed by the Oekonux Project since over ten years of research on Free Software and commons-based peer production. The paper being part of the next CSPP issue should be released in December 2011, but according to the release-early practices in Free Software, I will publish the patterns in a series of weekly blog posts. I will extensively use cross-linking between these pattern posts. First, most of the links will not work, since futures patterns still reside in the publishing queue, but more and more links will function as the referenced pattern posts appear — please have a litte patience. Now, let’s start with the abstract, introduction, credits, and literature.
