Hier nun unsere Antworten zu den Fragen vom Sustainable Europe Research Institute (SERI) aus Österreich:

ARBEIT

Economics and the Commons?!

Silke Helfrich gave an important introductory talk on the Economics and the Commons Conference (May 22 – 24, 2013, Berlin). The presentation reflects the progress of self-understanding of the commons movement. After some remarks by the moderator Armin Medosch the talk starts around 5:00 showing some commons projects illustrating the variety of the commons. At 21:30 Silke enters the more conceptual part discussing what all the different approaches have in common. The presentation ends at 54:00 and is followed by a discussion. Below, I summarize some of the conceptual statements.

These are some theses Silke developed in her talk (without discussing them here): (mehr …)

The Earth’s the Limit (2): Peak Oil—Peak Energy?

[First part]

During the last years, humanity has consumed about 500 exajoules of energy per year (an exajoule is a million million megajoules, or 1018 joules). As usual, levels of energy consumption vary strongly from country to country. While the average consumption per person is about 70 GJ (gigajoules), the inhabitants of Bangladesh, Eritrea, and Senegal use less than 10 GJ on average.

At the other extreme, the inhabitants of the United Arab Emirates and Iceland use 450–500 GJ per year, while per-capita usage in the small emirate of Qatar is a whopping 900 GJ. Germany uses about 180 GJ per person—more than twice the global average. Other Middle European countries are similar, while the United States and Canada use twice as much (330–350 GJ).

Is it realistic that in the future, everybody will reach the consumption level of Germany or the USA, or even more? (mehr …)

The question of transition and the role of money

A paragraph of my previous post about an article from Michel Bauwens in we_magazine lead to heavy reactions of Michel, cross-posted here and in Oekonux mailing list. Since some posts only go to the mailing list, I re-publish one of my responses here again. Here we go:

Hi Michel,

I try to answer your questions as best as I can, but I also take the freedom to question your questions, because they base on assumptions I don’t share.

Inclusive Democracy

EN: The »Inclusive Democracy Project« of Takis Fotopoulos may be regarded as forerunner of the »Peer Economy Model« of Christian Siefkes. It is amazing that many ideas look similar (e.g. the rejection of markets and state, awarding of taking over unpopular efforts, or the non-representational assemblies from the local to the global level). Takis Fotopoulos is explaining his model in the following video. [Update: English subtitles can be chosen using the black drop down list in the bottom menu bar of the video]

The Marcin & Keimform Dialogue

1. Dezentrale Fabrikation:

We are talking about FabLab delivering the promise of Bergmann’s Personal Fabricator – except for real. That means high skill and open source equipment, coupled with global design. The promise is producing any tool in a hardware store, any piece of electronics and elecromechanical equipment. You go to the hardware store today. All items there could be produced, realistically and cost-effectively – with FabLab – delivering the promise of Gandhi’s mass production by production by the masses.

2. Ökologische Materialien auf Basis systematischer Phytochemie:

Hiddinghausen talks, part 1: An integrated collection of free design

Peer-Ökonomie-Wochenende in Hiddinghausen

As announced in the German part of this blog, a weekend workshop on peer production and the peer economy took place during the last weekend (29-31 August) in the nice little town of Hiddinghausen in the German Ruhr Area. A detailed three-part report on the workshop, which was a fully self-organized event with about 30 participants, is available in German. The first part of the workshop was dedicated to my proposal of how to generalize the principles and practices of commons-based peer production into a full-fledged peer economy; in the second part we discussed ways of growing the range and versatility of peer production that are possible here and now. For this English-language documentation of the event, I’ll focus on this second part.

As a first initiative for facilitating the peer production of physical goods and services, I proposed to set up a „Universal Production Set“ (UPset): an integrated collection of free or open design. The goal of the UPset would be to provide designs, blueprints, and other production know-how for all areas of life, but with a a special focus on things that are essential for people to live a good life.

Transformation and ownership

On the Oekonux-Mailinglist there is an interesting debate about the relationship between private ownership and societal change, especially when it comes to commons based production of physical goods. Raoul Victor from France wrote:

The original question is how to deal with the ownership transformation when it concerns material means of production. I insisted on the fact that, at one moment or another (probably many years ahead), this will lead to a general social confrontation with capitalism, where „the workers of the world“ will play a major role, the germs of peer production practices, mainly in the freely reproducible goods domain, having played an important role in the evolution of their consciousness. This confrontation is inevitable because of the nature of capitalism itself.

This is my answer:
