Poppy – Open Source Humanoid Robot
Designed by the Flowers Lab at Inria Bordeaux and Ensta ParisTech (France) Poppy is an affordable and hackable humanoid robot for science, education, art and geeks. Both software and hardware are available under an open source licence.

While this is a nice project, they’re cheating a bit. While the software is really freen and open source (under GPL), the hardware isn’t, it’s licensed for non-commercial use only (CC BY-NC-SA). That’s incompatible with the Open Source Definition and the Open Source Hardware Definition and makes the acceptance of outside contributions into the project unlikely. (Since by accepting contributions under the same license they would lose their own right to use and distribute the hardware commercially, so they won’t.) A shame.
