Am 4. und 5. Juni 2011 findet der 4. Random Hacks of Kindness statt. RHoK ist ein an vielen Orten der Welt gleichzeitig und wiederholt stattfindender Programmierwettbewerb, der ein ganzes Wochenende dauert. Zum zweiten Mal wird es dabei auch im Betahaus in Berlin ein lokales Event geben.

Die RHoK-Anwendungen sollen in Krisensituationen helfen oder der Prävention und dem Schutz dienen. Dies können sowohl plötzliche Ereignisse sein (Erdbeben, Überschwemmungen, Terroristische Angriffe, Buschfeuer) als auch vorhersagbare Ereignisse (Monsunregen, Grippeepidemien…) oder auch längerfristige Krisen wie in Unruheherden, Gebieten mit chronischer Unterernährung, hohen AIDS-Raten, dauernden Dürren oder Auswirkungen des globalen Klimawandels. Weltweit dominiert die kapitalistische Produktionsweise das Leben der Menschen. Sie unterliegt einem Drang und Zwang zum Wachstum, der sozial und ökologisch verheerend ist. Anders als historisch ältere Formen von Wirtschaft, die zum Teil Märkte inkludierten, ist die kapitalistische Produktionsweise wesentlich Marktwirtschaft. Sogar die Lebenszeit wird zur Ware.

I recently arrived in Colombia where I will take part in a conference that starts on 11 May in Medellín. The topic of the conference is “Other Possible Worlds? Construction of alternative policies from governments and social movements in Latin America” and it is motivated as follows (translated from original Spanish):

Why this workshop?

Recent years have been marked by multiple crises—of an economic, social, political and environmental nature. It is quite clear that the neoliberal model, based on fossil energy and consumerism, has reached its limits. Against this background it is more than reasonable to consider social and economic alternatives.

It is frustrating for me, seeing clearly how almost all the world’s problems boil down to the design and the pervasiveness money, and seeing this point so often missed and overlooked by economists politicians and commentators, none of whom are offering solutions. The problem of money is still not being communicated. Despite proven successes, complementary currencies have a patchy history, and governments regard them with suspicion everywhere except South America. Through Community Forge I’m able to reach and help some of the grass roots organisations that do understand, but it seems so little when whole countries are sinking underwater. Many organisations are coming to us for help, but few people are coming to offer help. And when they do, we don’t even have time to manage them. The movement is growing, but not as fast as the economy is diving, and not as fast, I fear, as the money addicts are finding new ways to part us from it.

Nope, alternative money will not help us, when hard money crashes. Not missing pervasiveness of money is the problem, but pervasive money — at least in our thinking — ruling our activities. Demonetize it!

On the newly created demonetization.it mailing list (see demonetize.it), a hot debate on money and value started. As it went along, I thought it would be helpful to differentiate separate notions of value. This might refine our understanding of both the crisis and the way out of it: demonetization. The linguistic field of value as it appears in everyday language could be differentiated into four distinct concepts which are interrelated:

1. value
2. exchange value
3. use value
4. price

Strategien der Transformation — Tagung von Helle Panke e.V. Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung Berlin und Bund demokratischer Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern (BdWi) in Werftpfuhl 22.-26.9.2010

Mir ist nicht wirklich klar, warum die Commons in dieser Veranstaltung auftauchen, liest sich die Ankündigung doch völlig konventionell und von Commons unbeleckt (nein, »Gemeineigentum« ist eben nicht das gleiche wie Gemeingüter bzw. Commons). Einzelne Beiträge gehen gleichwohl auf die Commons ein. Schade, dass ich nicht an der Tagung teilnehmen kann.

BUKO-Seminar, 12.-14.2.2010 in Kassel

In den vergangenen Jahren erlebt das Konzept der Commons (Gemeingüter, Allmende, Das Gemeinsame, …) eine Renaissance. Von der Global Marshall Plan Foundation bis hin zum Weltsozialforum wird in der Wiederentdeckung, Erhaltung und Weiterentwicklung der Commons die Möglichkeit gesehen, die Welt gerechter zu gestalten und die ökologische und ökonomische Krise zu überwinden. Zuletzt wurde sogar ein halber Wirtschaftsnobelpreis für die Commonsforschung an Elinor Ostrom vergeben. Gleichzeitig werden die Commons im Krisenprozess selbst massiv angegriffen (Klimakrise, Privatisierung, Überfischung, Überwachung und Zensur, …).

The following manifesto is the result of a one and a half year process, where dozens of participants from politics, unions, sciences, the free culture and software movement, the environmental movement, economy as well as from art and culture discussed about commons and the relevance for humankind. It was developed in the context of the Interdisciplinary political salons of the Heinrich Böll Foundation‘s „Time for commons“.
